The Perception of Pope Pius XII in Czechoslovakia after 1945: from an Advocate of Peace to an Accusation of Wartime Imperialism under the Communist Regime

  • Original language description

Since the end of World War II, Czechoslovakia increasingly came under the influence of the Soviet Union. Attacks against the Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia were soon felt by the Holy See as well. After the war, it was very important for the Holy Father Pius XII to restore diplomatic relations between Czechoslovakia and the Holy See, especially due to the need to fill the vacant bishoprics. Mons. Ritter returned to Czechoslovakia, but the government agreed to appoint him only the Internuncio. Despite not always easy negotiations, the Holy See managed to occupy all the vacant bishop’s chairs in Bohemia and Moravia, however, the free activities of the bishops were soon limited by the repressive interventions of the state power. However, as the power of the Communist Party grew, the campaign against the Catholic Church became more aggressive. In the view of the deteriorating position of the Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia, Pius XII decided on the appointment of secret bishops without consulting the government. In March 1950, the last diplomatic representative of the Holy See in Prague was expelled by the Czechoslovak state. Diplomatic relations between Czechoslovakia and the Holy See were thus severed for a number of years.
