The Educator’s Twelve Kinds of Admonition: Textual Analysis of Paed. I 9, 76, 1–81, 2

  • Original language description

The paper analyses the text of Paed. I,76,1-81,2, focusing (1) on Clement’s original vocabulary and (2) on examples from Scripture. It suggests that Clement was inspired by Aristotle (Poet. 25) for the list of the twelve types of reproach. Regarding to the widely quoted biblical texts, the paper shows that the quotations from the book of Jeremiah 2-9 are the most numerous and that they are not quoted according to the Septuagint version, as might be expected, nor according to the Theodotion version (as can be seen, for example, in the case of the book of Daniel in the Stromateis). It concludes, that the Greek text of Jeremiah quoted by Clement in the Paedagogus represents a different ancient version, similar to codex Marchalianus (Q).
