A carrot proliferation disease associated with rickettsia-like organism in the Czech Republic.
Original language description
Carrot plants showing yellows symptoms were observed in East Bohemia in 1996 Considerable numbers of blue-white fluorescent areas were observed under optical fluorescence microscope in sieve tube cells of symptomatic plants, but not in healthy ones. Scanning electron microscope revealed spherical bodies in phloem, xylem and parenchyma cells in the diseased and healthy plants, and the presence of elongated structures in the phloem sieve elements of diseased carrots only. Transmission electron microscopyrevealed rickettsia-like organisms presence in sieve tube elements of symptomatic plants. The diameter of cross sectioned bodies ranged from about 0.2 to 0.3 mm, the long dimension of the elongated forms attained lenghts of 2.2mm. No other organisms wer edetected. This is the first report of single rickettsia-like organisms infection on carrot plants with yellows disease symptoms.
