Mechanism of isochemical transformations of iron(III) oxide nanoparticles - Mössbauer study

  • Original language description

The differences in the mechanism of the thermal transformation of cubic (b-Fe2O3, g-Fe2O3) nanoparticles are discussed and demonstrated with several experimental examples. Ultrafine particles of b-Fe2O3 were prepared by solid-state reaction of NaCl withFe2(SO4)3 in air, and by the thermal decomposition of Fe2(SO4)3. g-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were obtained by thermally-induced oxidation of FeSO4 and almandine garnet. Samples of nanocrystalline Fe2O3 particles were thermally treated in air at different temperatures and the changes of their structure, size and morphology were investigated using Mössbauer spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Mössbauer spectra proved the formation of e-Fe2O3 as intermediate during thermally induced transformation ofg-Fe2O3 nanoparticles to a-Fe2O3 while the direct transformation way was observed in the case of b-Fe2O3. All isochemical structural transformations were induced by the particle size increase, in accordance with AFM observations.
