Cytokinins in fertilized flowers of Helleborus Niger L.
Original language description
The perianth of fertilized Christmas rose (Helle-borus niger L.) flowers turns green and persists until the seeds are ripe. This process stops when the developing fruit are removed, but is restored by applying cytokinins in lanolin, thus suggesting a role for cytokinins in the metamorphosis of fruit-bearing flowers. LC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of, preponderantly isoprenoid, cyto-kinin bases and their ribosides, ribotides, and glu-cosides. In the fruit, the abundance of trans-zeatin type cytokinins increased enormously, during early seed growth. In the perianth, the greening process was accompanied by an increase in the levels of cis-zeatin type cytokinins.
