Arabidopsis class 1 homeobox (KNOXI) genes act through activation of cytokinin biosynthesis
Original language description
Continuous organ production is enabled through the action of plant meristems. Class I homeobox (KNOXI) genes are expressed in the shoot apical meristem (SAM), and play central roles in SAM function. Mutations in the Arabidopsis KNOXI gene SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) result in compromised meristem function. KNOXI proteins and the plant growth regulator cytokinin are involved in overlapping pathways, such as meristem maintenance and repression of senescence. To investigate whether cytokinin acts downstream of KNOXI proteins, we applied cytokinin to Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) shoot-meristemless (stm) mutants, and found that cytokinin application partially rescued the stm mutant phenotype. Specificmeristem expression of a cytokinin biosynthesis gene through the STM promoter in stm mutants partially complemented STM function. STM activation in 35S:STM-GR transgenic plants resulted in elevated cytokinin levels, and in increased expression of the cytokinin response gene ARR5. STM activat
