POPULATION BIOLOGY OF SHREWS (SOREX ARANEUS AND S. MINUTUS) FROM A POLLUTED AREA IN CENTRAL EUROPE
Original language description
Population biology of shrews (Sorex araneus and S. minutus) was studied in a mountain range in northern Bohemia (Czech Republic) heavily affected by aerial industrial pollution. In order to estimate the biological effects of pollution, we determined concentrations of heavy metals in soft tissues. Cadmium residues showed a slightly increased level, whereas lead concentrations significantly exceeded the commonly reported critical level (S. araneus: 6.8+/-5.2 μg/g Cd and 121+/-110 μg/g Pb in liver; 33.3+/-43.1 μg/g Cd and 321+/-296 μg/g Pb in kidney; S. minutus: 3.3+/-3.7 μg/g Cd and 836+/-416 μg/g Pb in liver. The significance of this heavy metal contamination was assessed by evaluation of ecological characteristics of localpopulations. The analysis of time series revealed a declining trend in shrew abundance. The dynamic pattern of multiannual variation in population size was non-cyclic and synchronized in both species of shrews. The litter size,

Czech description
Vliv znečistění byl zkoumán stanovením těžkých kovů a analýzou populační dynamiky a demografie rejska obecného a malého. Olovo překročilo hranice. Efekt na urovni populace byl ale malý.
