A great number of alfa-substituted ketones are suitable as a starting material for the synthesis of various classes of N- or O- containing heterocyclic compounds. Mostly various ketone derivatives are transformed to a-hydroxy or a-amino derivatives first. The new approaches, newest compounds and the recent development in this field are the subject of this review.
