Ecological conditions and the distribution of alpine juniper (Juniperus communis subsp. alpina) in the Hrubý Jeseník Mts
Original language description
Research that was carried out in 2001 ? 2005 aimed at identifying the up-to-date census count of alpine juniper (Juniperus communis subsp. alpina) and at investigating the impacts of the main environmental factors on viability of the species in detectedsites and on the overall health status of the populations of alpine juniper in the Hrubý Jeseník Mts. There were identified 13 sites with 283 individuals in total, but the sites differ dramatically in number of recorded individuals. Comparisons with historical literature sources show that the species has been in recession. The main reasons for decline of the species include: lack of suitable places for colonization, connected with a lack of adequate disturbance factors, competition of shading trees, presumed considerable age of the juniper populations and subsequent zero generative reproduction of the species. More than two thirds of the individuals found showed slight damage to their assimilation system. Bad or very bad health status w
