Synthesis of silver nanoparticles and study of their antibacterial and toxic effects
Original language description
Silver nanoparticles (NPs) constitute one of the major groups of nanomaterials used in many applications due to their unique properties such as catalytic, optical and antibacterial activity. Here we report high antimicrobial activity of silver NPs with average size of 25 nm prepared via reduction by maltose against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including highly multiresistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Also the toxic effect of silver NPs against protozoan Paramecium caudatum was tested. The obtained results proved that the silver NPs are toxic against the studied organism at the concentrations higher than 25 mg.L-1. This toxic concentration of silver NPs against Paramecium caudatum compared to the bactericidal concentration of silver NPs, is even one order higher.
