With data about the Carpathian Macroregion this Atlas aims to document the current change in this European region by means of 40 maps of the most socio-economic and natural indicators as well as disparities within the region. The main challenge for the region is to manage those rapid changes to achieve sustainable economic prosperitywithout the loss of its characteristic features. The Atlas was elaborated in the context of the International Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians. The convention, agreed under the lead of UNEP/REC Vienna, aims towards a sustainable development of the Carpathian mountain region. This Atlas serves as a solid base of information supporting stakeholder from the fi elds of research, politics and the economy in the decision-making process for the Carpathian region.
