The collared, and pied flycatchers are one of the most suitable model species for study of speciation. Males are chosen by females. Females decide about sex ratio of offsprings, frequency of extra-pair copulations, preferences and selection for male coloration, but, recognition of the mate is inherited on the Z chromosome, which is, in birds, inherited from their father
