Silver Voyage from Macro- to Nanoworld
Original language description
Silver, as the pioneer material in the nanotechnology research, can be considered the appropriate guide on the voyage from macro to nanoscale levels. The suggested set of experiments offer the preparation of macroscopic silver particles - silver mirror, microscopic "black" colloidal particles (approx. 500 nm), and also nanoscopic "orange" particles (approx. 40 nm). All of these forms of silver can be prepared via just one Tollens reaction using just variation in the initial concentrations of the reaction components. Macroscopic silver, in the form of mirror, can be then detected thanks to its typical metal shine. Colloidal and nanoscopic silver particles prepared in aqueous dispersion can be simply detected by laser pointer due to the existence of Tyndall effect. However, more sophisticated methods like UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering method or transmission electron microscopy can be required for the appropriate characterization of the all the prepared silver p
