Cartographic visualization for DEM quality assessment
Original language description
Visualization is a common and very important part of evaluation of spatial analysis results. Appropriately chosen methods of cartographic visualization can help us to make better and faster decisions about the quality of outputs. The paper, thus, discusses in its first part the suitability of using various visualization methods of digital elevation model (DEM) including the use of different dimensions for visualization in relation to the assessment of DEM quality. The real examples document the possibilities of using visualization to identify errors resulting from fundamental factors affecting the quality of DEM. In the last section of the paper the results from DEM assessment using visualization, which can be regarded as a highly subjective method, are compared with the results of more objective assessment methods, both global non-spatial (e.g. RMSE) and spatial methods (accuracy surfaces).
