Effect of pitfall-trapping on the abundance of epigeic macrofauna - preliminary results
Original language description
Pitfall traps catch surprisingly large numbers of ground dwelling invertebrates, including non-target species. The aim of this study was to assess if pitfall traps can dramatically reduce the numbers of epigeic invertebrates. Catches of two rows of pitfall traps, installed using a soil probe-cutter, and of which one row was operated for one year and the second for two years, were compared. The traps were placed in a floodplain forest in the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area. Common groups ofsoil invertebrates, specimens of Oniscidea, Opiliones, Diplopoda, Chilopoda and Carabidae, were chosen as model groups. Trapping dramatically reduced the numbers of Chilopoda and Carabidae. The supposed digging-in effect of the traps did not appear to affect the catches recorded in this study.
