Hilbert transform and noise
Original language description
Hilbert transform is a suitable tool to calculate the envelope of a modulated signal. Its typical use in optics is the calculation of the envelope of the interferogram in white-light interferometry. The longitudinal coordinate of the measured object is determined from the position of the center of the envelope. However, the electric signal at the output of the camera is affected by the noise. The dominant component of the noise is the shot noise caused by the non-uniform arrival of the photons to the detector. If the noised signal is evaluated by Hilbert transform, the form of the calculated envelope is also, of course, influenced by the noise and the result of the measurement is affected by an error. In our contribution, we look for the answer on following questions: How does the noise of the evaluated envelope differ from the noise of the original signal? How does the shot noise influence the longitudinal measurement uncertainty of white-light interferometry?
