Mining-related contamination of surface water and sediments of the Kafue River drainage system in the Copperbelt district, Zambia: An example of high neutralization capacity system
Original language description
Contamination of the Kafue River in the Copperbelt in Zambia has been studied using a combination of geochemical and mineralogical methods. Sediments downstream of contamination sources are highly enriched in Cu. Values of pH are close to neutral and sulfate behaves in a conservative way. Most transport of metals occurs in suspension. Metals in sediments can be re-mobilized during accidental acid spikes.
