Digital Aeronautical Charts: Survey of 64 Czech Air Force Pilots

  • Original language description

Aeronautical charts represent an essential tool in air navigation. However, with the advent of digitals technology, it is important to consider transitioning to an electronic form. In the 21st century the Czech Air Force (CZAF) fleet is partially equipped with devices that are able to improve in-flight navigation using digital data. A survey of 64 CZAF pilots was conducted in this study. Here we examine their experience with digital aeronautical charts, their opinion of digital maps vs. paper, and consider their comments and requests. Furthermore, currently used devices and data update methods were analyzed. While just one part of a broader research project, this study is based on the experiences and attitudes of actual users - CZAF pilots. Additionally, it provides feedback for geographers and specialists dealing with aeronautical charts and navigation equipment in the Czech Army that can applied in other military settings as well as with both public and private air navigation.
