What happened to the students of Applied mathematics?

For last several years there is a disturbing trend discussed by university lecturers of mathematics. In academic field, the lecturers are less and less satisfied with math knowledge of new students, i.e. the graduates of secondary schools who are eager to continue their studies at the university. After several years of work with first-year university students, we observe sharply decreasing proportion of students who are able to pass the exam of basic university course of mathematics. In the paper we will focus on first-year students of bachelor programme Applied Mathematics offered at Palacký University in Olomouc. At first, we will analyse their knowledge of basic mathematics with respect to the type of secondary school they graduated at. Later, we will discuss their study behaviour and study results based on the data from 2009 to 2013.
