Ecosystem evaluation in the frame of environmental impact assessment. Case study from the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The aim of this study is to show the scope of practical application of some landscape ecology concepts in environmental impact assessments of large investment projects implemented in river floodplains on the floodplain forest biodiversity. The presented concept encompass the habitat assessment concept. Application of this concept in the environmental impact assessment of an investment project on landscape biodiversity is demonstrated on the investment project of a transport construction of European importance - Danube-Oder-Elbe (DOE) Canal - in the river floodplains of the Czech Republic. The presented calculation of ecological harm to the habitats affected by the DOE project focuses solely on the construction of the canal itself -it does not assess other possible so-called induced investments, which might relate to the DOE canal construction. Thanks to the high number of the areas of individual biotopes (approx. 60,000 units) assessed under this study, it is possible to provide ecological risk assessment e.g. for individual branches of the canal, for individual river basins or individual administrative units upon utilizing the existing database in electronic form.
