Accessibility Zones of the University According to Students' Transportation Preference
Original language description
The paper presents the concept and practical implementation of delineation of the accessibility zones of the university city Olomouc for its students based on the survey of the students' preferences in commuting the city. Olomouc is a historical city with more than 24,000 university students that commute daily or weekly from the whole country. Because Olomouc is situated on the node of the main train and coach lines, the students prefer public transportation for their commuting. The main aim of the study was to draw time accessibility zones of the city for its management to respect both students and applicants daily and weekly commuting conditions. The authors' approach respect four considerations for the evaluation of accessibility zones procedure: a) the theoretical basis of the measure; b) the ease of aggregation over time; space, mode, and individual type; c) the data needed for estimation; and d) application and performance of the accessibility measure. The authors conducted an extensive survey targeted on all university students to identify their preferences in commuting. The time limits for daily and week commuting have been calculated as well as for unacceptable commuting (when students prefer another university closer to their homes). Then network analysis for train and coach lines divided the country into zones based on temporal accessibility to Olomouc. The comparison analysis with population and schools of each zone provides strategic information for advertising university courses in Olomouc. Because different measures computed from the same data set can lead to different conclusions, a systematic method of analysis is necessary.
