Involvement of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in polyphenol inhibition of benzo[a]pyrene-induced oxidative stress and neoplastic transformation

  • Original language description

Recently, Omidian et al. reported the beneficial effects of divers polyphenols on cellular damage caused by benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) (Omidian et al., 2017). Test polyphenols comprised resveratrol, quercetin, catechin, cyanidin, kuromanin and berberine. In particular, the protective and anti-carcinogenic effects of polyphenols involved: (i) prevention of BaP-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS); (ii) inhibition of BaP-mediated production of mitochondrial superoxide; (iii) inhibition (down-regulation) of BaP-dependent induction of genes related to oxidative stress and inflammation, including UCP2 and TNFa; (iv) inhibition of BaPinduced cell transformation to neoplastic colonies; (v) inhibition of cell proliferation increased by BaP.
