First Report of Powdery Mildew Caused by Erysiphe macleayae on leaves of Macleaya microcarpa in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

In September 2015, during a survey of powdery mildew occurrence in the Medicinal Herbs Centre of the Faculty of Medicine and the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic), serious powdery mildew infection on small fruited plume-poppy (Macleaya microcarpa [Maxim.] Fedde) plants was found. Representative specimens of the infected collections were deposited in the herbarium of the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Palacký University, Olomouc. Both anamorph and teleomorph states of the pathogen were found. Whenever possible, 30 independent measurements were obtained to describe its morphological characteristics. To confirm the identity of the fungus, the rDNA ITS region was amplified. A BLAST search of the NCBI database revealed 99% identity and query cover of 100% to E. macleayae R.Y. Zheng & G.Q. Chen sequences KT588619 to KT588623 and KT588631 published by Pastirčáková et al. (2016).To our knowledge, this is the first report of the holomorph of powdery mildew on adult Macleaya plants in the Czech Republic.
