    Autosterescopy in thematic cartography

  • Original language description

Autostereoscopy is a method for effective visualization of three-dimensional models with the help of ordinary imaging techniques. It allows achieving the 3D object observation without the need for special goggles, displays or other equipment. The Method itself is using rapidly alternating images of given object taken from defined angles, mimicking the position of the human eyes. Such animation induces a sense of depth. Autostereoscopy can be applied to a static image or even dynamic video materials. Firstly, we have focused on the autostereoscopic method itself, going from fundamentals of this technique through the description, how these principles can be used. Detailed guidelines containing available software tools define the process of application of autostereoscopy on ordinary three-dimensional computer models. These procedures are not restricted to specific software and can be used with different various available tools. Moreover, real applications on selected thematic maps are shown. Series of thematic maps is an illustrative set of examples of the way, how an author can use autostereoscopy on real-world examples. Paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the method. Furthermore, it contains a set of examples that will help to pinpoint possible areas of use.
