We review recent research on the morphological and cytological processes of sexual reproduction in diatoms, mating systems, the environmental factors that induce auxosporulation, and spawning, updating the long 2004 review by V.A. Chepurnov et al. The structure and formation of the wall structures (incunabula and perizonium) that contain and support the auxospore and control its development are discussed.
