Second-harmonic generation in multilayer dielectrics and quantization of light

  • Original language description

One-dimensional propagation in a bulk can be described easily in a quantum way using a suitably chosen Hamiltonian. Such a description is possible also in the layered medium. Neglecting the quantization, we notice that a similar classical description using the slowly varying envelope approximation would be subjected to an error of ignoring the surface contributions. In this paper we concentrate on the surface contributions of the propagation in a layer (slab) featuring the second-order nonlinearity. We divide the description into three steps. In the first step, the nonlinear interaction is neglected and the solution of the wave equation for a plane monochromatic wave with fundamental frequency is found. The second step corresponds to the slowly-varying envelope approximation and the third one includes the surface contributions. The case of a single discontinuity between linear and nonlinear media is solved after the definition of unidirectional components in the nonlinear medium. In the case of a nonlinear slab, the quantization of the studied fields is considered.
