An organism that lives on, or within, a host organism and obtains its food from, or at the expense of its host can be described as a parasite. Antiparasitics are medications that are utilized for the treatment of widespread parasitic diseases. Traditionally, natural products, especially in crude forms, have long been used to treat various parasitic diseases, like babesiosis, leishamaniasis, malaria, Trypanosomiasis and so on and so forth. Only a few modern drugs of natural origins are available for the treatment of parasitic disease, and the classic examples include the antimalarial drugs artemisinin from Artemisia annua and quinine from Cinchona succirubra. However, there is a significant body of literature that deals with discovery of antiparasitic compounds from natural sources currently available. This chapter covers predominantly the literature from the last decade, but still includes some older relevant materials as long as the molecules are active in vivo or, in the opinion of the authors, capable of modification to achieve clinical relevance.
