Medicinal natural products - An introduction
Original language description
Historically, natural products have played a pivotal role in the discovery of several modern drugs since the discovery of morphine (a narcotic analgesic mainly used in post-operative pain management) from Papaver somniferum, the very first purified chemical from a natural source, which was developed as a modern drug. Following on from this discovery, several block-buster drugs of modern time have been discovered from natural sources, and the anticancer drugs camptothecin, doxorubicin, paclitaxel, vinblastine and vincristine, are just a few examples. One of the major contributions of natural products in modern drug discovery is in the area of development of anti-infective drugs including several antibiotics, starting from the discovery of penicillin, and antimalarial drugs quinine and artemisinin, the discovery of the latter awarded Tu Youyou with the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 2015. Because of unique chemical diversity, natural products will continue to be one of the major sources of new drug leads for drug discovery and development covering several therapeutic areas in the years to come. This chapter introduces the book, ‘Medicinal Natural Products—A Disease Focused Approach,’ and to present an overview of various topics that have been covered in various chapters in this book
