Neuroprotective natural products
Original language description
Neuroprotection means safeguarding the central nervous system (CNS) from neuronal damages caused by chronic or acute neurodegenerative diseases. To achieve neuroprotection and to prevent CNS diseases, the use of phytomedicine and phytofood, as well as compounds derived from there, represents one of the popular options. Not only the terrestrial plants that offer neuroprotection and neuroprotective compounds, several marine organisms, especially macroalgae, are also known to produce neuroprotective compounds. The underlying mechanisms of action of these natural neuroprotective agents are fundamentally based on their antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. This chapter presents an overview on neuroprotective natural products, predominantly from plant origins, their plausible mechanisms of actions, and in silico approaches to identify natural products leads with potential neuroprotective and therapeutic applications in CNS disorders.
