Preferences of Self-Help Group Members towards Microcredits: Preliminary Results from Tanzania
Original language description
Self-help groups (SHGs) have an overwhelming potential to empower members of poor communities and combat poverty. Many NGOs support the functioning of SHGs by providing their members with access to various services, including microcredits. Different clients prefer microcredits with divergent characteristics (size, disbursement period, interest rate, a system of distribution, etc.). This paper aims to identify the preferences of SHGs members from the Wakulima Maendeleo Group cooperative based in southwest Tanzania. We conducted a choice experiment with 18 members of the cooperative and found that members prefer individual and quick loans with long repayment periods. To get these qualities (i.e., to meet their preferences), they are willing to get smaller loans and pay higher interest rates.
