Parameter identification in contact problems for Gao beam

  • Original language description

The paper focuses on identifying the material parameters in contact problems for the nonlinear beam model introduced by D.Y. Gao in 1996. This model is governed by a nonlinear fourth-order ordinary differential equation. The beam is supported unilaterally by a foundation, which can be of two types — perfectly rigid or elastic. The problem of identifying the material coefficients of the beam and modulus of an elastic foundation is formulated as an optimal control problem with an appropriate least squares cost functional. The paper analyzes the existence of a solution to the identification problem along with its finite element approximation. Finally, the paper presents several numerical examples to complete the analysis.
