Introduction: Global South Voices on Sport for Development and Peace

  • Original language description

Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) has been widely understood as the intentional use of sport and play to achieve non-sporting goals and outcomes; however its application is also seen as a field transversally crossed by contested narratives of Global North and South power dynamics. The challenge with this view is that it limits the voices, perspectives and creative SDP efforts of those operating in the global South. The book highlights the ‘international’ field of Sport for Development and Peace practices and theories created, developed, reinvented, interpreted and reinterpreted by people who belong to the communities where these sporting experiences have been taking place in the past decades, whose critical reflections and experiences were yet to gain attention in the international academic and practitioner’s communities in the English language. Views of diverse stakeholders, program participants, promoters, coaching staff, volunteers, researchers, teachers, lecturers and other actors that have been difficult to access for researchers who do not usually speak languages other than English are found in the book. Theoretical and comparative issues hitherto little explored or little known due to linguistic and cultural matters also receive attention in this book. This book is a political-scientific initiative that aims to cause a decolonial im-pact in the field of knowledge production in several areas, mainly areas such as sociology of sport, anthropology of sport, SDP, international development, international aid and development cooperation, geography, among others. Thus, this book contributes in a fundamental way to the development of a more globally balanced and even more ‘diverse in epistemologies’ field of SDP studies.
