Potentially dangerous meteorological phenomena: An example of the middle-sized Central European city of  Olomouc (Czech Republic)

  • Original language description

The article analyses potentially hazardous meteorological phenomena and their spatiotemporal variability in Olomouc, a medium-sized Central European city, during 2017–2022. Ten phenomena related to temperature, precipitation, and wind were studied using data from Metropolitan station system Olomouc (MESSO) network and Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) stations. Extremes were evaluated using percentiles or CHMI criteria. The phenomena varied in frequency and intensity. Daily maximum temperatures ≥ 35 °C were recorded yearly, along with 10 heat waves and tropical nights; tropical days appeared even in May or September. Severe frosts (≤ –20 °C), cold waves, and off-season frosts were also observed. Daily rainfall ≥ 40 mm and long dry periods occurred. Wind gusts varied significantly across city parts. Results confirm that urban station networks are valuable not only for targeted measurements but also for identifying the recurring spatial patterns of extreme weather in urban environments.
