The paper deals with the analysis of typical errors students of English make in word formation exercises. Qualitative and quantitative analysis is based on students' results in word formation exercises in the entrance and exam tests at the Department ofEnglish, Faculty of Education, Palacký University, Olomouc. The most common types of errors are presented and some conclusions for the development of students' language proficiency are drawn.
