The paper deals with museum education in the Czech Republic, its current state and issues. The topic is introduced by a brief overview of the development of museum teaching in the world, from the first establishment of public museums in the 18th centuryup until its accelerated development which took place in European and American museums in the 1970s. The period of 1990s brings rapid development of museum teaching into the Czech context and with it the many diversified museum educational programmes forpublic. The profession of a museum educator is being established and the subject of museum education is given the status of scientific discipline which reflects in theory its practice and produces valuable findings of the reality of museum teaching.
