Awareness of sexuality in people with intellectual disability in homes of non-coeducation type for persons with disability - preresearch
Original language description
The paper focuses on the awareness of sexuality in persons with intellectual disability. This partial research study examined issues such as male and female somatotypes, autoerotic techniques, contraceptives, menstruation, sexual intercourse and diseases. The research was conducted in selected homes for disabled persons of a non-coeducation type (female, male) in the Czech Republic, using semi-structured interviews with the clients of these residential social establishments. The research study included 25 men and 25 women with mild and moderate mental retardation. The results of the research study confirmed that persons with intellectual disability in selected non-coeducation homes for persons with intellectual disability had a lower degree of awareness of sexuality issues, relating especially to masturbation, contraception and venereal diseases. The results suggested a necessity of educating institutional clients in masturbation techniques. This also applies to risks associated with unprotected sexual intercourse. Most respondents knew what sexual intercourse was, but had insufficient knowledge about protection from sexually transmitted diseases and prevention of accidental conception.
