Sexuality in persons with intellectual disability living in sheltered housing in the context of their life satisfaction.

  • Original language description

A human is a sexual being; regardless of the presence of intellectual, mental, physical or sensory disability. Sexuality in persons with intellectual disability (ID) is currently seen as a legitimate and important part of life and life satisfaction. The paper presents partial results of a research study, the objective of which was to analyse life satisfaction in 50 persons with ID living in sheltered housing in the Olomouc Region and Zlín Region in the Czech Republic. The data collection technique was the Life satisfaction questionnaire translated to Czech by Rodný and Rodná, which focuses on ten areas (health, work and employment, financial situation, leisure time, marriage and partnership, relationship with own children, own person, sexuality, friends, acquaintances and relatives, and housing) assessed on a seven-point scale (from "dissatisfied" to "very satisfied"). The results suggested that the average satisfaction of adults with ID with their lives and sexuality was similar to the majority population. At the same time, however, the respondents pointed to problem areas, which should be addressed in the future. This includes primarily significant dissatisfaction with the own person and the previous way of life.
