Images of China in History Textbooks of the United Kingdom from the 1990s to the Present Day
Original language description
My research analyzed how China was represented in history textbooks of the United Kingdom from the 1990s to the present day. 29 history textbooks were examined using a quantitative method to identify the proportion of Chinese history in history textbooks and the type of Chinese female images they contain. Discourse analysis was also used to analyze how the Tiananmen Square incident was described in these history textbooks. The research identified that history textbooks of the United Kingdom feature certain stereotypes and prejudices when describing China. This research establishes that, when writing history textbooks, it is necessary to overcome the limitations of one’s own national historical narrative and take a neutral and objective approach.
