The Death of a Person With Disability in Residential Care Services: PFA and/or Crisis Intervention?
Original language description
Dying and a death of a close person are perceived by the bereaved as crisis situations. These situations have unpredictable and various impacts on their psyche. Certain characteristics emerge in persons with disability permanently living in residential care establishments. In this context, the bereaved are not only relatives or close people of the deceased but also other service users and workers who came in touch with the deceased on a daily basis. The loss of a close person might provoke the so-called acute reaction to stress –acute crisis. To reduce the impact of an acute crisis on the psyche, psychosocial first aid (PFA) or crisis intervention procedure can be applied. Experienced and educated professionals are necessary for residential care services to deal with these situations effectively. Appropriate education strengthens the preparedness of workers who should react adequately at the right time. The aim of this paper is to define the topics that currently relate to the mentioned issue and to describe, by means of a content analysis of relevant sources, the process of using PFA and crisis intervention procedures intended for the bereaved (users, workers) in residential care services for people with disability. Furthermore, the paper presents a summary of differences between PFA and crisis intervention with an emphasis on professional employee education. This review study (using the basic requirements for a review study) analyses available studies published in the past 5-10 years, and describes the possibilities of putting PFA and/or crisis intervention into educational reality as well as into practice.
