Circumstances Affecting Relationships in a Family with a Child with Disability
Original language description
Family relationships are related to their coherence, ability to solve everyday problems and challenging situations. However, the family has internal and external circumstances that affect the relationships between its members. Gender stereotypes and a number of other circumstances can also weaken the coherence of these relationships in the daily confrontation with a child's handicap. The paper provides an overview of these circumstances that may affect the quality of family relationships. Data collection and evaluation was conducted on the basic of two parallel qualitative surveys to determine which circumstances affect the quality of relationships within the family of a disabled child. One research focusing on intergenerational relationships and the other on the roles of care partners as well as gender stereotypes. The embedded theory was chosen as a method of analyzing family members' interviews. Its paradigmatic model brought a holistic insight into the circumstances affecting family relationships in a good and bad sense. By simple enumeration, all the identified circumstances that strengthen or weaken family relationships were determined. The paper is supplemented by a comparison of two case reports representing the counterparts of the identified circumstances, i.e. those that can strengthen or weaken the relationship.
