Language Preparation of Children in Czech Kindergartens through Immersion
Original language description
This paper describes an experimental implementation of immersion education in Czech kindergartens. Approaches like this are very rare in the Czech environment. In the Czech Republic, bilingual education in public primary schools or secondary schools is common, but pre-primary education focuses on foreign languages only in the form of afternoon free time clubs for children led by Czech teachers. Immersion teaching, which takes place throughout the whole day when the children are in kindergarten with a native English teacher is a new experience for public kindergartens in the Czech Republic. For this reasons the authors focused on the opinions of parents and teachers about the implementation of this type of institutional education. The aim of the paper is to examine the attitudes of parents and preschool teachers to immersion education by means of thematic questionnaires. Another aim was to investigate the attitudes of parents and kindergarten teachers to foreign language teaching, the level of their language skills, and their opinions and experiences in the context of teaching a foreign language to preschool children. A specific aim is to investigate the attitudes of the respondents towards the Chinese language and their theoretical interest in teaching Chinese to children in the context of pre-primary education.
