Sexuality in a Male with Intellectual Disability from the Perspective of the Mother
Original language description
The paper focuses on sexuality in a male with Down syndrome from the perspective of his mother. The main objective of the survey was to reveal specific experiences with maturing, and the development and manifestations of sexuality in an individual with intellectual disability as perceived by his parent. Part of the survey was to identify whether and how the mother communicated with her son with intellectual disability about the issue of sexuality and his needs, how she perceived her son’s sexuality manifestations, what her opinion was about establishing partnerships, and whether or not maturing and sexuality had some specific manifestations in the individual with intellectual disability. The method was s semi-structured interview divided into six thematic areas. The survey, the results of which are presented in this paper, has brought an open mother’s view of sexual development of her child with intellectual disability and its specificities. The survey suggested that despite some differences, persons with intellectual disability had an urge to establish partnerships, spend time with their close friends, and fulfil their sexual needs and desires. The semi-structured interview helped understand the private life of a specific family and reveal the observations and experiences concerning a child with intellectual disability, and subsequently highlight areas that deserve attention and that should be investigated in more detail.
