Determination of the Level of Reading Literacy of Primary School Pupils in an International Context

  • Original language description

The main goal of this paper is to present the thesis of the dissertation. In the research that will be carried out as part of the thesis, we will focus on determining the level of reading literacy of primary school pupils in the Czech Republic. Then it will be compared with the level of reading literacy of pupils at primary schools in English-speaking countries. A mixed design was chosen for the research, i.e., a combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In the quantitative part, the level of reading literacy of pupils in the 1st grade of primary school in the Czech Republic and subsequently in English-speaking countries will be examined, using a didactic test as a research method. In the qualitative part, the concept and content of reading literacy of primary school pupils in the Czech Republic's curriculum will be analyzed and compared with the anchoring of the concept of reading literacy in the curriculum of English-speaking countries. The next step will be to survey educators in both countries regarding used methods and forms of teaching. As part of the research investigation, preliminary research was already carried out, where we focused on 4th-grade primary school pupils from Olomoucký, Hradec Králové, and Moravian-Silesian regions. Pupils were given a didactic test in the Czech language, which was supposed to check their knowledge in all levels of reading literacy. Didactic tests were graded and recorded in a table. From the survey results, it was determined what level of knowledge the students have at individual reading literacy levels. At the same time, a comparison was made between primary schools in individual regions. It was found that the reading literacy level of pupils differed in the regions, even though pupils in the Czech Republic are educated according to the same curriculum.
