The paper deals with one of the key phenomena of the contemporary museum culture, which is decolonisation. In general, it constitutes a necessary instrument by which to reflect on how the global colonial system has shaped the today's world, and has influenced the way we perceive ourselves and other cultures.Memory institutions have played an important part in global colonialism, and ethnographic museums in particular represented an instrument of imperial and colonial identity. Today, cultural and educational institutions aware of their role in perpetuating and recreating an identity on individual, local and global level are taking various steps towards reflecting on their colonial past.Considering the term colonialism without colonies, it follows that decolonisation is relevant also for those countries which have never had colonies as it shows the way they participated in the system of economic and cultural transfers of the past while adopting the Eurocentric and imperialist view of other cultures and otherness as a whole. As an example, the paper reflects on the current exhibition displayed in the Náprstek Museum in Prague that presents Emil Holub, a 19th century Czech explorer, as perceived and interpreted through the optics of the 21st century.
