Physical activity of pre-school children

  • Original language description

The main aim of this study was to identify level and patterns of physical activity (thereinafter PA) in preschool children and compare these to PA of adolescents and health-related recommendations for PA. Monitoring of PA in habitual school week using the accelerometer Caltrac and pedometer Yamax (Digi-Walker SW-200) and further evaluating the PA according to the activity energy expenditure (thereinafter AEE) and the number of steps. During September and October 2005, 104 Czech preschool children (51 boys and 53 girls) were monitored under comparable daily climate conditions (cloudless or sunny weather, 19-24 °C). On workdays during the 7 day PA monitoring, each preschool child participated in the whole program as prepared by the kindergarten. Relativevalues of AEE in preschool children are distinctively the highest from all the age groups of adolescents on workdays (girls: AEE=12.03 kcal.kg-1.day-1  3.39 METs, F=10.14 p<0.0001; boys: AEE=13.41 kcal.kg-1.day-1  3.07 ME
