Inclusion of respiratory muscle training in the training of youth fin swimmers
Original language description
The objective of the pilot study was to verify the effect of including additional respiratory muscle training into the training of young fin swimmers. A group of swimmers was randomly divided into an experimental (n=12; 12+-1.7years; 158.1+-11.0cm; 47.4+-10.5kg) and control group (n=8; 10.2+-2.5years; 136.3+-17.7cm; 44.0+-17.0kg). The E-group of fin swimmers used daily (2x15 minutes) respiratory muscle training with inspiratory (Threshold IMT) and expiratory (Threshold PEP) device at home for a month. Lung function tests and respiratory muscle strength were assessed pre and post (spirometer Zan 100 Handy USB). The strength of inspiratory (p?0.01) and expiratory (p?0.05) muscles after one month of trainer-based training significantly improved in the E-group contrary to the C-group (p=0.78; p=0.58 resp.). A significant increase was observed in underwater swimming for one inspiration (E-group: p?0.05; C-group: p=0.92). Respiratory trainers can be an appropriate device for increasing the e
