Evaluation of factors of senior fragility of the clients of third age at the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacky University, Olomouc
Original language description
Senior fragility is characterized by a decrease in physical fitness, disability, reduced quality of life, increased morbidity and mortality. With increasing age reduced bone strength, muscle strength and changes in individuals' mobility can be seen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors of seniors fragility, such as muscle strength, bone density and body composition parameters of the clients of the University of the Third Age FTK UP Olomouc. The research group consisted of women attending the University of the Third Age at the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacky University in Olomouc. The sample consisted of 79 women (53-75 years). Body composition was assessed by multifrequency bioelectrical impedance with use of device InBody 720. Muscle strength in the arm, forearm and hand flexors was evaluated using a digital pinch grip (MIE Medical Research). Information on bone density were obtained through local densitometer (EXA 3000), which evaluates the heel and forearm area. To verify the strength of relations between variables Pearson correlation coefficients (rp) were calculated, statistical significance was determined at a value of p = 0.05. Statistically significant correlations were found between age and muscle strength in hands. Moderate positive correlation was found between the force of hands and the quantity of muscle mass(SMM) , then the amount of cell mass (BCM), the amount of bone minerals (BMC) and the size of the basal metabolism (BMR). Moderately strong correlation was found between the measured values in local areas (right, left forearm and calcaneus) and the SMM, BCM and BMR. For the right calcaneus was then found a statistically significant relationship between bone density and the amount of body fat and the amount of visceral fat. These results confirm the relationship between aspects of the fragility of seniors, especially the relationship between muscle strength, bone density and selected parameters of body composition (SMM, BCM, BMR).
