Opportunities and Challenges of Defence Education in Teacher Training
Original language description
The ongoing war in Ukraine has underscored the need to enhance civic preparedness and national resilience in neighbouring countries, including the Czech Republic. In response, the Concept of Preparing Citizens for National Defence 2025–2030 introduces a framework for integrating defence and security education into the national curriculum. This article examines the possibilities of implementing this concept within teacher training, with an emphasis on higher education programmes. Drawing on historical perspectives that linked physical education with military and civil protection training, the study examines how modern pedagogical approaches can be integrated with traditional, defence-oriented education. The analysis identifies opportunities for enhancing teacher preparation in areas of physical readiness, security awareness, and civic protection. The article concludes with a set of proposals for aligning teacher education with the new policy framework, thereby supporting the development of national resilience and the effective preparation of next generations for defence and security challenges.
