Bridging Two Worlds: The Harpsichord’s Influence on Piano Sound and Technique in Children's Music Education and Historically Informed Performance

  • Original language description

This conference paper introduced the results of research that explored the pedagogical benefits of integrating harpsichord principles into modern piano education in the context of the growing interest in historically informed performance. Conducted at the Department of Historical Interpretation at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, the research combined expert interviews, teaching method analysis, and practice-based experiments with students. By comparing performances of the same repertoire on piano, harpsichord, and piano after prior harpsichord experience, the study examined how this experience influenced articulation, phrasing, and touch. The results suggest that direct experience with the sonic characteristics of the harpsichord enriches students’ overall approach to performing repertoire from earlier stylistic periods on the piano, providing valuable insights for both historically informed and contemporary performance practice.
