  • Original language description

Torben Brandt is a Danish radio legend. Since 1976, he has been producing and engineering documentaries, reportage, drama, sound art, and cultural news programs, alongside his work as an international media advisor for the UN and various NGOs in Africa, Asia, and the Arab world. Since 2014, he has served as editor-in-chief of the biweekly program “Radio Tales” (Radiofortællinger) on DR – Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s P1 talk channel. He belongs to the “Golden Age of the Danish radio documentary generation,” which won numerous awards, including Prix Italia and Prix Europe, in the 1980s and 1990s. During the same period, he and his soulmate and teacher, Stephen Schwartz, worked closely together on studying, teaching, and practicing the visual aspects of radio storytelling, as well as developing an interviewing style they named “The Moment Interview.” Torben Brandt has continued to refine this method since Stephen Schwartz’s death in 2013. In recent years, he has conducted hundreds of “Moment Interview Master Classes” in various countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, and Jordan, for emerging young radio talents as well as experienced podcast and radio makers. In October, he will present his skills at JAMU in Brno. Most radio storytelling includes many memories and flashbacks. Not infrequently, the entire story is built on memories. The Moment Interview technique brings both the interviewer and the storyteller back to the scene of the drama, to the “now” of then. In October, Brandt and the JAMU students will reconstruct the drama together — the movements, the scenography, the smells, the words, and the thoughts — all practiced and explained during the masterclass session.
